The Eye of the World (The Wheel of Time, #1)
I've been reading The Wheel of Time for 20 years, anxiously awaiting the arrival of the next instalment, even as I became frustrated with the pace of some of the later books. I just have to know how it ends - I've spent too much time with these characters not to find out.
I'd considered reading some summaries (like Leigh Butler's awesome Wheel of Time Re-Read) in preparation for [a:Brandon Sanderson|38550|Brandon Sanderson|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1394044556p2/38550.jpg]'s stint, but after hearing his Authors on Tour Live! talk about The Gathering Storm, and how he was chosen as the author, I was infected with his enthusiasm for the series and decided that I have to go for it - I probably won't be satisfied with a summary - I want to visit Randland again myself. Possibly even including reading [b:Crossroads of Twilight|113435|Crossroads of Twilight (Wheel of Time, #10)|Robert Jordan|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1408325146l/113435.SY75.jpg|195579], which I usually recommend against. "Nothing happens," I say, "Read a summary and move on. Here, I'll summarize it for you: 'Nothing happens'".
It's not about reading, it's about re-reading, and luxuriating in the fanboyness of it all, and I don't care what anyone thinks of it.
Anyhow, as a consequence, I don't think I'll rate the rereads - I'm too close to the books, and I figure I'll either unfairly rate them down because they don't live up to the idealized books they've become in my memory, or because I'll be swept up in the moment and over-rate them. And because, honestly, I find that reading a book with the intention of rating it takes me out of the moment a little, probably lessening my enjoyment just a little.
