The Rithmatist (Rithmatist, #1)

Book cover for The Rithmatist (Rithmatist, #1)

A fun book, which will draw comparisons with Harry Potter. As usual, Sanderson has put an interesting magic system in the book (although one that is less rigorously defined than in, say Mistborn). Characters were a little thinly drawn, as might be expected in a YA novel, but fortunately less so than in many others that I've read. I had sympathy for Joel and Melody (and enjoyed their interactions). The mystery's solution was hinted at just enough during the book, but still had enough of a twist to remain interesting right 'til the end. I look forward to other books in this world. (Oh! I like the world. Springwork is cool. Confederations of islands are cool. A magic system that's interesting but not widely applicable enough to change the whole world is cool.)
