Atonement

Book cover for Atonement

Quite good. I've seen complaints that the beginning was long, with nearly half the book taking up the equivalent of only minutes in the movie. I thought the beginning was the best part. I enjoyed McEwan's voice and the opportunity to get inside the heads of the various Tallises (and friends). A really beautiful start, I thought. The end part was quite good too, nearly returning to the heights of the beginning. A little bit of a let down in the middle while Robbie was off at war. If this were an epic fantasy, that section would've been the long sea voyage. Ah well, as complaints go, that's not too bad.
I'll tell you, though, there was less Atonement than I was expecting—more meta-atonement, I thought. But that's not such a good title.
