The Remains of the Day
A very well-written book. Ishiguro captures the voice of Stevens and never lets go. Unlike many characters, Stevens is completely consistent in his views and motivations, and this makes the story, to my mind. I enjoyed nearly every passage, and the gradual reveal of Stevens' and Darlington House's twined history built up a detailed picture of the man.
A slim book, yet I still found that there was a little fat in it. Early on, the reader can tell where the story is going (and more importantly where the story has gone), so there's very little tension. I think it's this lack of mystery that made me take as long as I did—while I enjoyed the book while reading it, there was no rush to get back to it.
