Three Moments of an Explosion

Book cover for Three Moments of an Explosion

High points and low, as with almost any short story collection. But for me, many more low than high. China Miéville being probably smarter and certainly more imaginative than I am, all stories had a cool idea in them. But I found that many just never went anywhere with them. Or went somewhere and… stopped, leaving me ultimately unsatisfied. A few presented interesting and/or sympathetic characters and sucked me in, or just fleshed out the ideas a little more.

Highlights:

  • The Dowager of Bees

  • Dreaded Outcome

  • A Second Slide Manifesto

  • Four Final Orpheuses

  • The Buzzard's Egg

  • The Bastard Prompt

  • Rules

  • The Rabbet

  • Sacken

Hmm. More than I thought there'd be when I wrote this up. Maybe 2* is harsh. But the rest, well, some of them I was disappointed with at the end, and some I couldn't even bring myself to finish. Short stories, abandoned partway through. I've never done such a thing that I remember…

Ah well. Maybe it's me.
