White Cat, Black Dog: Stories

Book cover for White Cat, Black Dog: Stories

I had a hard time figuring out how to rate this. The language was generally beautiful, so I was mostly entertained during each story, and some really landed for me, while a few didn't, mostly due to a too-fast ending. For what it's worth, in descending order, I think I liked:

  1. Skinder’s Veil

  2. The Lady and the Fox

  3. The Girl Who Did Not Know Fear

  4. The White Road

  5. The White Cat’s Divorce (this is the best example of liking it right up until the end)

  6. Prince Hat Underground

  7. The Game of Smash and Recovery (I just couldn't latch onto this at all)

I didn't understand at first that each story was a "retelling" or "inspired by" an existing fairy tale. Once I did, I tried to look for the link to the original. I generally failed.

Anyhow, as with most collections, some ups and downs.
